society's expectations

Society tells me how I should feel based on what I choose to wear. I totally give in to it here and there. Like I should have more variety of shoes and hijabs. But what makes me happy inside is wearing the same exact style and color day in and day out. Most days I’m happy with the choice of doing what feels good to me. Then randomly the ‘should’s’ pop-up all over again. And all over again I have to chip through the mold that society keeps shaping me into. What is your ‘feel good’ society keeps straying you away from?

set the ego aside

We can’t control most of what happens around us. But we can what’s inside with practice and consistency. Our biggest enemy and the trap to our downfall is EGO. The fact that we let our ego feed on us and our relationships. There is a difference between having respect for ourselves and demanding one from others. There is a difference between expecting to be treated with human decency and demanding others to honor our entitlement. Others’ level of success does not make you or yours less. And you are not completely protected from the kind of loss others have experienced. The only One deserving of complete pride is the One who owns every little thing outside and inside of you....

praying for good outcomes

All traps. You know what would be a great loss? When you keep praying for a certain outcome for the sake of worldly things. And it ends up that the world disgraces you anyway, the outcome is not good for you or those you love and you end up with Allah’s anger. Omg. Scratch all of it. Let’s start over. Start with Allah. Pray for good outcomes knowing Allah is aware of the best one. And the rest will all fall into place

bless the teacher

Bless the teachers. We may not have a big masjid, we may not have many resources, but most valuably we have teachers who are committed to providing knowledge, support, and love for our faith. For all you teachers, thank you. And for those of you who aren’t involved with your masjid or incorporate Islamic Studies, please start looking into it. It does make a difference to the development of our children. Raise well-rounded Muslims. Raise proud Muslims. Raise educated Muslims. What they value and prioritize in the future is in our hands today.

reignite the spark

I recently picked up a short audio course on basic Mandarin to prepare myself for some upcoming adventures (in shaa Allah!). As a translator, there is always this feeling when I start studying a new language - all of a sudden that language takes over my mind. I'm repeating phrases that I've learned, turning the words over and over in my head. I want to hear it and read it and speak it as much as I can. I want to dive in and be fully immersed. And this sensation that I am having, getting swept up in learning Chinese, recalls another time in my life when I felt that very same feeling. It was 2014, when I first started...
